I never use chat rooms but I know other people like to. So it might be something we add someday. Is there any advantage of a site chat room verses the chat programs like AOL messenger?

I think some people have chat messengers but rarely log on unless it's for that rare occasion.  And others don't publically post their handlers at all for privacy or commitment concerns.

I also think people log on to a message board and expect communication in their own pace, not real time, as it is in chatrooms, but they would be more than happy to join if invited through the PM system at their leisure time or someone is already in the chatroom and they feel chatty.

But people do prefer the anonymousity, convenience, and the "not having to commit" part.  Another plus is chatrooms enable meetings or group meditations without all the mIRC troubles newbies go through.

Or we can have a shoutout box, like they do at Expansions's forums.

I see your point..and yeah discussion forums are for different things than "chat rooms" .I was thinking it might be nice to be able to talk directly with people about nothing  in particular when you see they are logged on the site. Some other online forums i frequenty visit have this feature. Its not used too often but i have had some good experiences with such a thing.Just a suggestion... couldnt think of anything else..the site looks great

I see at Expansions forum they are having a poll to see if the should continue to keep the chat service available. They say that they have not seen much use of that feature and are considering disabling the option since it takes up system resources. So far most of the people have voted that they don’t use the chat service. So that makes me think that it wouldn’t get much use here either.

The SOCF is another example we should learn from.  Their chat feature was also rarely used.  That's why I agree with Hyperspace;  we do not need the chat feature.

I do not think a shoutbox is necessary either.  A typical shoutbox is used for unnecessary greeting.  If not that, used for conversating, in which case, inevitably leaves out the other members.  Furthermore this hogs up the resources if they had not just communicate through an instant messenger or the PM system.

I'm not anti-social, but I'm just saying it won't hurt to socialize through the PM system or the general forums or the instant messengers ;)

It might be fun sometime to try a get together in IRC sometime though.  I use to use MIRC.  Have a date and time set like weeks or a month in advance and co-ordinate times since we are not all on same time. Make it once a month or every other month.

Ya never know who might show up in chat rooms.  Just a thought.  I know its been said before.  Live chat is fun though.  But it is hard to schedule.

Live chats are fun.  It's a good idea.  We can also all focus on deprogramming in a global scale, besides chatting, on mIRC.  It would have a powerful effect on the future of events.  After some careful planning, Hyperspace should post something in the announcements.

Ive been on irc for years and started many alternative type chat rooms(that have in turn transformed into popular websites and radio shows today) and have met amazing people from all over the world, some who have travelled long distances to meet me in person.  IRC is a great way to connect to others globally. People that have never used IRC, don't know what they're missing.

Thekid, you should post the irc channel here.  Is it on effnet or?  and so on.  I get on irc some during the week.

TheKid, could you create a script, website or sumthing? If it can automate everything that would be great? I don't know how to log into a server.

Get Boldened.   The program Mirc is easy to use.  But the Kid may know of better ones?

http://www.mirc.com/

You will need to learn a program to get on.  Unless there is a web base irc page?
