DAYTON, Ohio - John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a conservative who shares his maverick streak, as his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain said he made his pick after looking for a political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."

McCain said that Palin was "exactly who I need. She's exactly who this country needs to help us fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second."

Palin thus became the first woman named to a spot on a Republican ticket. "I am honored," she said as she stood by a beaming McCain in her first few seconds in the national spotlight.

In a fast-developing presidential campaign, McCain made his selection six days after his Democratic rival Barack Obama, named Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, as his running mate.

The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable — Obama picked an older running mate, and a man whom he said at the outset was qualified to be president.

McCain chose Palin, a generation younger than he is, and a governor less than two years, and made no such claim about her readiness to sit in the Oval Office.

Unlike Biden, who attacked McCain sharply in his debut last week, Palin was indirect in her initial attemps to elevate McCain over Obama.

"There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America and that man is John McCain," she said as McCain beamed. The Arizona senator was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam.

Palin has a strong anti-abortion record, and her selection was praised warmly by social conservatives whose support Mccain needs to prevail in the campaign for the White House.

"It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University school of Law. "This will absolutely energize Mccain's campaign and energize conservatives," he predicted.

With his pick, McCain passed over more prominent contenders like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, as well as others such for former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, whose support for abortion rights might have sparked unrest at the convention that opens Monday in St. Paul, Minn.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama derives from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger than two of McCain's seven children. She also is considerably younger than Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In its formal announcement, the campaign pointed to her powers as head of the Alaska National Guard and the mother of a soldier herself as evidence that she "understands what it takes to lead our nation..."

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like 1988, when then-Sen. Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, Pallin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, until she became governor.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes — and enmity — after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

Her husband, Todd Palin, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and is a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who competes in the Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. The couple lives in Wasilla. They have five children, the youngest of whom was born in April with Down syndrome.

Hmmm,

Both Hillary and Arnie are not nominated as running mate for VP.

This seems something more important is to be expected beyond Pres. elections, because I don't see why Bush/Cheney would give up their power with these Pres. candidates.

Thus  ... maybe Osama (not Obama) and his Muppet Qaida Club or the Long Beard society from Teheran will give us a new fireshow like 09/11 in the next months.

I could imagine:

Baby Bush underground or in Nebraska again with Airforce 1, Dick Cheney the interim emergency President, Wallstreet closed for 5 days again, and a State of the Union speech against the axes of evil from Teheran (or Moscow ? ), and Hillary applauding "God bless America" to save Dollar and Dow Jones index.

Elections in this case will be canceled; so, Cheney will be the next president (in this case) .

As a governor Palin is the only candidate with executive experience. She has a reputation of not playing the good ol' boy game even within her own party.
She has actually brought the change to Alaska that Obama/Biden talk of doing for  the country .

Interesting choice IMO. I'll bet Hillary is ticked off!

I thought it was an interesting choice too. I suspect McCain picked a woman to try and get voters who supported Hilary. I’m starting to think that McCain will win the election.

Well the election is only 9 weeks away.We all know alot can happen in that brief time.

Many Afro-Americans who don't usually vote, due to feeling disenfranchised ,may now surface in great number.

It looks to be a lively time.

We have seen Obama on our news day and night with his strong crowd, celebrity support and I just can not believe how serious the citizens take the election, goodness people in the crowd are crying while he is speaking, it is like a cult following the way they see him and all other candidates, just the whole scenario is totally unbelievable!

Woo Hoo!  I love his choice just for the fact I wanted a woman President (Hillary) but looks like I settle for a woman Vice Pres... sure!  Too bad McCain is nuttier than a $28.00 fruitcake from Assumption Abbey. , - - Just my opinion there.  icon_headbash

On some past thread here, it was Richard who mentioned -- in the future a woman Pres. is supposed  to tell unruly, rioting Americans to cease and desist their violence.  I wonder if McCain passes on in office, she takes over and this fulfills what John Titor predicts.

Sily, I agree. This is a whole different scenario than I figured. McCain could die in office and Sarah could become the first female president.

Here's some info about our new Vice President... Doesn't she remind you a little bit of Geena Davis? Do you remember how Geena got to be President? The President DIED!!!
Geena was a liberal as they get... you don't suppose someone's going to slip McCain a micky and we end up with President Palin do you?

Re: GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN A PHOTO JOURNEY
Dear Rayelan,
Have been reading your post for two years. Finally got up the nerve to
join. I live in Alaska. And I can tell you this. She was doing good in
promoting transparent government. Maybe too good. Now she is to be removed
from our state. What they must have promised her. She will be swallowed up
in DC. What a coup by the Evil Ones. She is out of her league there. And
we know that the senile Mccain does not like menfolk around him to
debate with. Look for several evil things to happen-the cracking open of
Alaska's great resources by the multinationals with the complicity of our
weak bought officials. Look for a big military industrial complex to be
extended here with the resultant wastes and excess troops that come
here, get excited, and shoot all the game they can find. It is frankly so
depressing. The average Sheople is welfare dependent on Federal Funds and
will likely not bleat a word in protest. Rayelan, could she possibly be a
Faction 2? I am so worn down these days.
Sincerely h.

Sarah is too innocent for Washington.
Please tell your readers to pray for her everyday.
She's the best thing that this country will ever know.
We need to do everything we can to protect her soul from
the monsters in Washington.

I don't have any problem with Sarah Palin sitting down across
from Putin. Any woman who can hunt moose in Alaska can stare down
an adversary like Putin. She'd just bring along her 30 ought 6 and they'd see eye to eye perfectly. You posted photos of Putin fishing. Sarah loves to fish too. I think she will make a great president... just in case.
I lived in Alaska years ago and I have great respect for Alaskan women. They are in a league of their own. Just wait and see what I mean about her!

Re: GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN A PHOTO JOURNEY
SO McCain picks the woman in red! Let's see if he can remember her name
rather than her breast size. Sounds like he's meant to lose... and I
wouldn't be certain Hillary is finished for 2008.

Ha! Say the Online Hillary Supporters

By Krissah Williams Thompson

The HillBloggers -- stalwart online supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton -- are fired up this morning by the announcement that Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The common refrain: "Obama will regret not choosing Hillary now!"

Taylor Marsh, a Las Vegas blogger who developed a large following of Clintonites during the primary, wrote this morning that: "This is a move to peel off disaffected HRC voters. I guess McCain thinks they're stupid and willing to vote for any woman. Rabidly pro life, an NRA member, she's not exactly a champion of women's civil rights. We'll have to see where she stands on health care and equal pay. But one thing this does is keep Hillary Clinton in the forefront throughout the general election. We'll be hearing the phrase 'Hillary Clinton voters' until November."

A post on Tennessee Guerrilla Women, a blog run by Hillary supporters in the state, said the Palin pick will cause large numbers of women to "once again tune into politics. And karma will once again prove to be a total [pain] for Barack Obama and the party elders of the undemocratic Democratic Party!

"Barack Obama should have begged Hillary Rodham Clinton to be on his Democratic ticket. John McCain may well be about to bring that chilling fact home to Barack Obama."

On the group blog Feministe, Jill Filipovic, a 20-something New Yorker, worried that the Palin pick would "woo white suburban politically moderate female voters" from the Dems.

Palin "has a solid resume. She's not an old white dude, which makes McCain look less stodgy. Biden will have a harder time debating against her without coming across as a bully (especially since he's something of a loose cannon prone to idiotic slips of the tongue, despite being an excellent debater). She could potentially woo white suburban politically moderate female voters. She's likable and has a very all-American story. She has a son in the military. The media is already swooning over her.

"All that said: She doesn't have much foreign policy (or any other governing) experience, which puts a dent in McCain's argument that experience is everything. But... yeah, this was a smart choice on McCain's part. Damn."

No Quarter USA, an online hub for anti-Obama Hillary supporters, had this comment from Danny in Alaska, a disaffected Hillary Democrat who had pledged not to vote for Obama, on a news post. He called Palin an independent and said a "vote for MCCAIN IS NO LONGER A PROTEST VOTE! I want bumper stickers."

It occurs to me that she may have been put on the ticket as a means to rein her in and keep her close.

Well it was only a matter of time for the mud to start flying. I'm not contending that the assertion is true or not but will point to some assumptions that we are being asked to believe.

First assumption is that the pics are legit.Maybe, Maybe not .

The Governor looks in a couple of them(pics) to be standing as if she is pregnant.Perhaps it takes a woman who has "been there done that "to recognize the stance .I don't know but looks it to me.Also pregnant women do seem to get a glow and some facial rounding which it appears the governor has in a few pics.  Bristol does look more pregnant than her mother. However her mother is wearing a vest ( hard to tell) . The author evidently has never been pregnant. Ever trying "sucking in" a supposed 7 month fetus? It doesn't work and Bristol doesn't look to me as if she is sucking in her belly. Her face does however seem a bit rounded.

Second assumption is the pregnancy myths we are being asked to believe.

Having given birth to 4 children I can tell you that each labor got progressively LONGER  not shorter. So the labors get shorter I know for a fact is a myth. Not for all women.

It's a myth that a woman's water always break on it's own. Most women have to have their water broken. Some do leak amniotic fluid and it's not considered dangerous in every case.

Women do not carry babies the same ,even the same woman and a different pregnancy. Some get wider ,some get deeper and some get both. I do however think it would be difficult to hide a 5th pregnancy, though it may depend ones activity level as my grandmother gave birth to 9 children and even with the 9th didn't show like some with their 3rd and 4th. She was also very active. My point is it's a variable.

As for Bristol's bout with mono I can say from experience of my own bout in my teens and my daughter's bout at that age that it takes about 6 months to feel like you are well again and then again it depends on other factors such as stress etc. I will however admit that the timing of Bristol's bout is curious.

Perhaps the most damning evidence that would relate to this assertion for me is  in watching the announcement scene itself. Bristol is holding the baby the entire time and that baby looked and felt so very content. This isn't that unusual to me as I cared for my own baby brother in my teens and he was just as comfortable if not more,in my arms as he was in my mother's at times.  What did stand out to me is that not once did the Governor go over to Bristol to touch the baby or seem to check on him etc. Not once. I realize that she had a job to do but if it had been me I would have been compelled to check on the child or at least show him off as I am always a mom first.

VP nominee Sarah Palin says teen daughter is pregnant

Associated Press
3:49 PM EDT, September 1, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's.

A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child's father. Bristol Palin's baby is due in late December.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.

The disclosure of the pregnancy came on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, scaled back because of Hurricane Gustav, and three days after McCain named Palin as his running mate. The other news was likely to overshadow the disclosure.

John McCain and Sarah Palin meet with hurricane officials The first-term Alaska governor was in Minnesota preparing for her acceptance speech when the campaign issued the statement; her family was home in Alaska.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," they added.

The father was identified in the statement as Levi, but the campaign said it was not disclosing his full name or age or how he and Bristol know each other, citing privacy.

Sarah Palin's fifth child, a son named Trig, was born in April with Down syndrome. Internet bloggers have been suggesting that the child was actually born to Bristol Palin but that her mother, the 44-year-old Alaska governor, claimed to be the mother.

Palin spokesman Bill McAllister emphatically denied those rumors, and McCain adviser Mark Salter said the campaign announced the daughter's pregnancy to rebut them.

"Senator McCain's view is this is a private family matter. As parents, (the Palins) love their daughter unconditionally and are going to support their daughter," said McCain spokesman Steve Schmidt.

"Life happens," he said.

"An American family," added Salter.

The advisers said Palin told them about the pregnancy during lengthy discussions about her background. At several points during the discussions, McCain's team warned Palin that the scrutiny into her private life would be intense and that there was nothing she could do to prepare for it.

Advisers said Palin's daughter should be afforded privacy like the other candidates' children. Said Schmidt: "If people try to politicize this, the American people will be appalled."

In Monroe, Mich., Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama condemned rumors involving the children of candidates and echoed the McCain campaign argument. Said Obama: "I think people's families are off limits, and people's children are especially off limits."

Obama adamantly denied anonymous claims that his campaign helped spread the rumors.

"I am offended by that statement," Obama said. "Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I ever thought that there was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they'd be fired."

Prominent religious conservatives, many of whom have been lukewarm toward McCain's candidacy, predicted that Palin's daughter's pregnancy would not diminish conservative Christian enthusiasm for the vice presidential hopeful, a staunch abortion opponent.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson issued a statement commending the Palins for "for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances." He added: "Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord."

Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America called the pregnancy private. "It's a matter that should stay in the family and they have to work through it together. My prayers go out to them."

Added Combs: "We're excited about the governor and think she's going to do well."

Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law, said: "We're all sinners."

"We all make mistakes. Certainly, the ideal is not to get pregnant out of wedlock. But she made the right decision after her mistake," he said.

she's bloodline, her maiden name is heath, english name, ex prime minister sir edward heath, heath ledger recently died. red flags include fanatical religious nut, distance runner(mind numbing, good for programming) she likes to kill sh*t(pictures of her surrounded by dead animals, wearing fur), she wants to depopulate polar bears so they can drill oil.

been following her weird preggo conspiracy.

facts are this.

she didn't give birth to the down syndrome baby, her 16 year old daughter did.

she used the down syndrome baby to cover for her underage daughter and for political support.

sex appeal + loves and cares for down syndrome babies next to mccain looks pretty good.

fact is, it's her daughters baby.

latest news report to squash the fake preggo rumors say her daughter is NOW preggo, how could she possibly be the mother of the down syndrome baby if she's preggo now?

wow the conspiracy rumors must be false! the young girl is preggo now!

it's all smoke and mirrors, they're all nwo/illuminati families vying for control of our little planet.

ex beauty pagent contestant, pro war, and on and on.......the scenario you described is possible
