By R. Douglas Fields | sciam.com Electromagnetic signals from cell phones can change your brainwaves and behavior. But don't break out the aluminum foil head shield just yet. Hospitals and airplanes ban the use of cell phones, because their electromagnetic transmissions can interfere with sensitive electrical devices. Could the brain also fall into that category? Of course, all our thoughts, sensations and actions arise from bioelectricity generated by neurons and transmitted through complex neural circuits inside our skull. Electrical signals between neurons generate electric fields that radiate out of brain tissue as electrical waves that can be picked up by electrodes touching a person's scalp. Measurements of such brainwaves in EEGs provide powerful insight into brain function and a valuable diagnostic tool for doctors. Indeed, so fundamental are brainwaves to the internal workings of the mind, they have become the ultimate, legal definition drawing the line between life and death. Brainwaves change with a healthy person's conscious and unconscious mental activity and state of arousal. But scientists can do more with brainwaves than just listen in on the brain at work-they can selectively control brain function by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This technique uses powerful pulses of electromagnetic radiation beamed into a person's brain to jam or excite particular brain circuits. Although a cell phone is much less powerful than TMS, the question still remains: Could the electrical signals coming from a phone affect certain brainwaves operating in resonance with cell phone transmission frequencies? After all, the caller's cerebral cortex is just centimeters away from radiation broadcast from the phone's antenna. Two studies provide some revealing news. The first, led by Rodney Croft, of the Brain Science Institute, Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, tested whether cell phone transmissions could alter a person's brainwaves. The researchers monitored the brainwaves of 120 healthy men and women while a Nokia 6110 cell phone—one of the most popular cell phones in the world—was strapped to their head. A computer controlled the phone's transmissions in a double-blind experimental design, which meant that neither the test subject nor researchers knew whether the cell phone was transmitting or idle while EEG data were collected. The data showed that when the cell phone was transmitting, the power of a characteristic brain-wave pattern called alpha waves in the person's brain was boosted significantly. The increased alpha wave activity was greatest in brain tissue directly beneath to the cell phone, strengthening the case that the phone was responsible for the observed effect. Alpha Waves of Brain Alpha waves fluctuate at a rate of eight to 12 cycles per second (Hertz). These brainwaves reflect a person's state of arousal and attention. Alpha waves are generally regarded as an indicator of reduced mental effort, "cortical idling" or mind wandering. But this conventional view is perhaps an oversimplification. Croft, for example, argues that the alpha wave is really regulating the shift of attention between external and internal inputs. Alpha waves increase in power when a person shifts his or her consciousness of the external world to internal thoughts; they also are the key brainwave signatures of sleep. Cell Phone Insomnia If cell phone signals boost a person's alpha waves, does this nudge them subliminally into an altered state of consciousness or have any effect at all on the workings of their mind that can be observed in a person's behavior? In the second study, James Horne and colleagues at the Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre in England devised an experiment to test this question. The result was surprising. Not only could the cell phone signals alter a person's behavior during the call, the effects of the disrupted brain-wave patterns continued long after the phone was switched off. "This was a completely unexpected finding," Horne told me. "We didn't suspect any effect on EEG [after switching off the phone]. We were interested in studying the effect of mobile phone signals on sleep itself." But it quickly became obvious to Horne and colleagues in preparing for the sleep-research experiments that some of the test subjects had difficulty falling asleep. Horne and his colleagues controlled a Nokia 6310e cell phone—another popular and basic phone—attached to the head of 10 healthy but sleep-deprived men in their sleep research lab. (Their sleep had been restricted to six hours the previous night.) The researchers then monitored the men's brainwaves by EEG while the phone was switched on and off by remote computer, and also switched between "standby," "listen" and "talk" modes of operation for 30 minute intervals on different nights. The experiment revealed that after the phone was switched to "talk" mode a different brain-wave pattern, called delta waves (in the range of one to four Hertz), remained dampened for nearly one hour after the phone was shut off. These brainwaves are the most reliable and sensitive marker of stage two sleep—approximately 50 percent of total sleep consists of this stage—and the subjects remained awake twice as long after the phone transmitting in talk mode was shut off. Although the test subjects had been sleep-deprived the night before, they could not fall asleep for nearly one hour after the phone had been operating without their knowledge. Although this research shows that cell phone transmissions can affect a person's brainwaves with persistent effects on behavior, Horne does not feel there is any need for concern that cell phones are damaging. The arousal effects the researchers measured are equivalent to about half a cup of coffee, and many other factors in a person's surroundings will affect a night's sleep as much or more than cell phone transmissions. "The significance of the research," he explained, is that although the cell phone power is low, "electromagnetic radiation can nevertheless have an effect on mental behavior when transmitting at the proper frequency." He finds this fact especially remarkable when considering that everyone is surrounded by electromagnetic clutter radiating from all kinds of electronic devices in our modern world. Cell phones in talk mode seem to be particularly well-tuned to frequencies that affect brainwave activity. "The results show sensitivity to low-level radiation to a subtle degree. These findings open the door by a crack for more research to follow. One only wonders if with different doses, durations, or other devices, would there be greater effects?" Croft of Swinburne emphasizes that there are no health worries from these new findings. "The exciting thing about this research is that it allows us to have a look at how you might modulate brain function and this [look] tells us something about how the brain works on a fundamental level." In other words, the importance of this work is in illuminating the fundamental workings of the brain-scientists can now splash away with their own self-generated electromagnetic waves and learn a great deal about how brainwaves respond and what they do. Very good article Richard and so much truth, but could we reduce our need for the cell phone? It has become part of us and it actually feels like it has always been here and the general population do not consider it to be technology anymore, its just there without thought.

This topic is extremly important, I think. As Astrojewels wrote: the cell-phone is becoming part of us. Look at female models in erotic magazines and fashion magazines etc. The sexual theme is involved with the cell-phone. The cell-phone is in the picture of the model to be shown. This is to imprint males (and females) the cell-phone is becoming a sexual object to become more attractive or an object of desire, or even a body part with a sexual function. Females will take this idea over very rapidly, because of fashion imprints and programmings. The program to have a cell-phone with you, which actually programs you again, is the circle people are trapped in without knowing it. in the past a car or cigarette was substitute of the man's sexual organ, the cell-phone will be the substitute for both male and female.

Basically, without really giving away anything...it is about cell phones that make people go 'gaga.' EVERY cell phone - Everywhere. Kind of like mind-control. It is a horror novel, but it is really good. One of the better 'new' Stephen King books that I have read.

Good to know DT, yes I feel it is horror. How sad, the cell-phone is not used as it could be or should be for our own comfort, instead it is discomforting us in the end.

Interesting DT, I really don’t think we will begin to see the damage for at least ten years from the cell phones, this is how long it will take for all that electromagnetic energy to interfere with our own body electrics; this is a slow ‘poison’ and designed at the younger generations as they just about have their cells glued to their body, it is so important to them, like it will be the end of the world if they miss the call! The damage that is happening now is people are feeling a little lost, think of all the people using their cell phones at this very moment, these phones transport a frequency from one phone to the other, we can not see it, but all that frequency is filling our personal space. It is like we are all being subjected to ‘light electrocution’ but to our electromagnetic body not our physical. Everyday more people are feeling tired and not themselves, the cell phone epidemic is well and truly in the second stages.

I liked his movies Signs, Unbreakable and Lady In The Water. Didn't really like The Village or The Sixth Sense, tho. The Happening is getting not-so-great reviews but I'm still going to go see it. I believe... (I might be wrong about this because I haven't seen the film) .... but I think it's a movie about The Earth getting mad at people that inhabit *her*. I pretty much feel like I can weather anything after sitting through Adam Sandler's Don't Mess With The Zohan on Friday. *shakes head* good lord in heaven above...

Personal opinion - cell phones are not good for you. Great Britian has put out some kind of warning against young people using them based on some kind of 'cellular deformation', i.e. cancer on humans that still have a growing nervous system. Then there is the neat article (maybe on Rense) of putting 2 cells phones together with an egg in the middle. The egg gets cooked people! What a many don't realize is that the cell phone is a digital (along with 'wireless' home phones) transmitter. Transmitter. Anything that transmits, radiates. They 'say' it's not enough to hurt anyone. But according to whose study? Yeah, right. Cell phones are like potato chips -- can't just talk on it for a sec, the conversion just goes on and on, especially for younger people. And younger people are more vulnerable to "the latest and greatest" gadget. Because, face it, it looks cool and gadgets are fun. Though the UK has posted the warning, the US refuses to do so. Wonder why. Oh, yeah, green stuff. Anyway, the dangerous part (healthwise) is when the thing is 'sending sound' out, then it's in transmit mode. When you are just listening to the other person, it becomes a receiver. Think walkie-talkie. Just like a radio operator has to have all kinds of gizmo's and knowledge to prevent himself from getting radiated to death using his own radio and those in his neighborhood, it also applies to wi-fi, cell phones, wireless anything. Then...to complicate...you have the wires in your house, the electronics in your car, at work, all along the road (telephone poles) to work, cell towers.. Aaaaak! Vibrations resonating off everything everywhere like a huge live-experimental microwave! Note: we are the potato. Anyway, just last week a co-worker found out she had a tumor wrapped around the nerve to her ear. Guess which ear it was.... yep, the one she listens to her cell phone with. So, folks, that is why you shouldn't have any wireless phone base anywhere within 10 ft of your head (even thru walls); nor any kind of electronics near your head at night. Cell phones are great for emergencies, a handy bug for Uncle NWO and a great way to locate you at any given moment. Just like your tv is also a great bug and handy scanner to your living room. I did miss it. I had all plans to go and then something came up. I will see it though, eventually. I do like some of M. Night's films. Now... for sure this Friday I'm going to see the Dark Knight. My dad wants to go (his suggestion) so I'm going along. It looks ............ dark. Yikes. Heath Ledger's last film, I think.

Last week, I went to a telephone store, and I said I want a good-old telephone with a fixed line with NO wireless-transmissions possible. How bad: almost impossible to get. The sales person thought/looked af is I was coming from another planet.

They want everybody having wearing a cell-phone for mind-control and transmitting energetic sexual frequencies to them/from them. corded telephones are rapidly disappearing. they are removing also all the telephone boxes/points across the cities, because ¨everybody already has a cell-phone¨. Same is with magnetic recording devices i.e. cassette recorders; this is to prevent people having broad spectrum recorded magnetic energies for own ussage i.e. in crystals and healing purposes. digital stored music contains much less frequencies for sound storage, but still is capable to be full of sublimal triggers digitally ¨remastered¨.

Polly, This has been around for several months now and reportedly was a hoax. CNN did a report and showed by slowing down the cellphone/popcorn video you can see the kernels being replaced with pre- popped corn. Also others attempted this to no avail just like with the boiled egg by cell phone. Though I believe, with several activated cell phones. someone did get one kernel of corn to partially pop. Maybe psy-ops to have people believe that cell phone dangers are hooey?
