i feel as this is another corporate consumer holiday. designed to make number 1, people spend money on consumer goods. for instance, i heard a ad on the radio yesterday screaming at me to buy a dvd player or a stereo for my mom! yes you need to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars in troubled financial times to show your motherly love! number 2, it makes men and children feel 'obligated' to show their mothers love respect, when that is something that should be done everyday! number 3, it makes fathers and children and especially broken families, feel "guilty" and sad if they don't do something 'special' for their mothers on that specific day. it also makes the mothers of the broken family feel lonely, sad and guilty, when they have no contact with their children. all around crap! artificial holiday! boycott!!!! oh and by the way! happy mothers day!

I totally agree about the consumer focus of this "holiday". Business is always going to try to capitalize on anything they can, even the "holy" holidays, if they can squeeze a buck out of it. I think it is our responsibility to stay away from the glitz & glamour and concentrate instead on what is meaningful to us. I just had a great Mother's Day. My girls (grown women, actually) took me for a hike and they provided a picnic lunch they had prepared and packed. The weather was perfect and the hike in the woods was wonderful, we didn't come back out for hours!
