BRASILIA (Reuters) - Iceland has overtaken Norway as the world's most desirable country to live in, according to an annual U.N. table published on Tuesday that again puts AIDS-afflicted sub-Saharan African states at the bottom.

Rich free-market countries dominate the top places, with Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada and Ireland the first five but the United States slipping to 12th place from eighth last year in the U.N. Human Development Index.

But the index, blending 2005 figures for life expectancy, educational levels and real per capita income, finds that all 22 countries falling into its "low human development" category are in sub-Saharan Africa, with Sierra Leone last.

In 10 of these countries, two children in five will not reach the age of 40, said the compilers at the U.N. Development Program. Last year's report said HIV/AIDS had had a "catastrophic effect" on life expectancy in the region.

The index ranks 175 U.N. member countries plus Hong Kong and the Palestinian territories. It does not include 17 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, because of inadequate data.

Norway had held top spot for six years but was edged into second place by Iceland this year because of new life expectancy estimates and updated figures for gross domestic product, or GDP, the report said.

U.N. officials played down the significance of minor short-term shifts in the rankings including the slide in the U.S. position. They said if subsequent data for the year in question been available for last year's report, the United States would have been in 10th, not eighth place.

The United States scores high on real per capita GDP, which at $41,890 is second only to that of Luxembourg ($60,228), but less well on life expectancy -- joint last in the top 26 countries, along with Denmark and South Korea, at 77.9 years.

Japanese have the longest life expectancy -- 82.3 years -- and Zambians the lowest, at 40.5.

The report said most countries had seen their human development index rise over the last 30 years, but in 16 it was lower than in 1990, and in three -- the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe -- lower than in 1975.

Per capita GDP is 45 times higher in Iceland than in Sierra Leone.

The United Nations has published its human development index every year since 1990.

Iceland ????????

Brrrrrrrrr, extremely cold !  That's why it is called ICE-land and from october to april it is dark, all the day long.

I would prefer Monaco or Gibraltar.

I agree octahedron, who would want to live in ICE-land. I have noticed that when these surveys are done, Australia always gets into the top 3, go Aussies go! I seen a recent survey that puts us at the second longest living expectancy to Japan, I would agree because we have many older citizens here, and most usually retire to the north coast.
Let me ask anyone who wants to reply, if you could just do it today-

Where would you live and why?

Why, I would move to Iceland, Karen!  LOL!  (That's my mirth for the day.)

Hasn't Iceland been thawing lately or am I thinking of somewhere else?

No, not Iceland, if you could choose any place in the world to live, where would you go?

Hmm...that's a tough one Astrojewels. I do like the cold and snow, and I do know that I would like to leave the States...I'm thinking somewhere in Europe.

No offense to all you Aussies out there, but I do not think I could deal with all the heat out there - no matter how beautiful it may be. Now if you tell me that there are areas that have snow and ice...well maybe I would consider it.

DT,
Of course we have snow, we have everything! this is about 3 hours from where I live and there is plenty of snow, and even in the summer the temps stay pretty low.

http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/regions/highcountry/alpine/

Or you could go to Tasmania

http://www.abc.net.au/northtas/stories/s1969560.htm

I think these are the two coldest places here in oz.
Polly,
it sure does look nice, but all that snow and cold weather, I would just die!

Iceland looks like a nice place; I’d like to check it out someday. Tasmania and the Alpine Region look nice too. :)

Actually, Karen, according to the info Iceland has cool summers and mild, though windy, winters so it's not like going to Siberia!  Now there, you might die!  :-)  It takes hardy stock to live in the coldest parts of Siberia and survive.  I admire people who can do that.

Richard, I could do Iceland for a trip.  I'll bet it is refreshing there in many ways.

One of my daughters got it into her head to move to Iceland so I did some research for her.  She ended up not going, but it seems like a nice place.  It's hard to immigrate there, though, you have to have a letter of employment to get in.

Greenland has all the ice, Iceland has more green area.  My favorite discovery is that the highway crews will move the path of construction rather than disturb any fairies.

Hi Polly,
What’s cool to some is cold to me? I just do not like cold weather, and I have never in my life seen snow, can you believe it?

Everybody, DT and Richard are the only ones who replied to my question.

Where is your dream location? Anyone

I think I'm rootbound ! I've thought about it and as I see nowhere in the world immune from the calamity of human nature and the dark ones I would have to say my ideal place is right here in the states. But then I'm Native American from both sides of my family and direct descendant of Pocahantas on one side ,indirect on the other.

I had a similar discussion with a friend recently. She suggested it has a lot to do with roots. I have to agree. My cousin's daughter is 6. She was born in Sweden, the homeland  of here father,  has lived in a few countries in her short life and traveled extensively. She now resides in Hong Kong. When people ask her where she lives she looks them straight in the eye, in a defiant ,penetrating way I'm told, and says "Kentucky". lol!! She loves Kentucky as do I, land of her mother's birth.   It's kind of sad actually,as their eventual residence will be Brazil.

I do think if I had to move out of my homeland I would choose Southern Ireland. Again.. roots.

MN,
I don’t think it is weird, most people I have ever come across love their birth country, they might have left for reasons of survival, a better way of life but they do have that connection and always will I think. It seems your cousin’s daughter has her best memories in Kentucky, her happy times.

I don’t like blazing heat or extreme cold. If there’s a place on this earth where it is in the 70s everyday is where I’d like to live. Tasmania sounds close to a place like that. I just need to win the lotto and then move out there. ;)

Great topic.

Maybe in a next life I could be a farmer in the remote areas of Southern Argentina.

A lot of space, silence and simple life forms.

Sometimes Western Australia seems attractive to me because of the warm climate and plenty of space and silence. However I understand it is very under NWO-control.

Richard, Do you know that there is just such a place in the states?  I'm with you . I don't like extremes in temps either. Or a lot of wind.

Octahedron, I understand your need for quiet but do you really want silence? There are  many days I crave to hear the sound of little kids laughing and playing.

If you're referring to the silence like when the power goes out I totally understand.

Octahedron,
I can tell you first hand, we are not under as much control as is claimed, yes we have problems. I think the way you can determine how each country is under control- is to focus on what ‘you can do’ and not what ‘you can not ’, and here we still are very free compared to many countries. Where I live is quiet and a little slow for some, you take notice of different sounds, there is never silence, there is no traffic noise, but in this quiet the trees sway, and each type of tree has a different sound, together they are like a symphony, to me that is freedom.
Richard,
Tasmania and New Zealand are the last two places where you can get pure water; the water from Tasmania is like nothing I have ever had.
I love oz, but if I had to choose somewhere else, I would live on a small island near Fiji, eat only nature’s treats, swim, hike, no technology, and no shoes.

Iceland looks so pretty and I might visit in the future but ...........

as a permanent residence put me down for The Big Island, HI.  I too will be barefoot, listening to the palm trees rustle, feeling the "trades" every day, floating around with the manta rays and green turtles and viewing the stars from the top of mauna kea.  Can't forget the great sunsets/sunrises.
