SA system a babalaas buster?
14/04/2008 07:32  - (SA)

Lauren Thys, Beeld

Johannesburg - The days of headaches caused by wine are nearly over, thanks to Guy Kebble's new purification technology.

Kebble is a former Springbok rugby player and also the brother of murdered businessman Brett Kebble.

Kebble's company, Surepure, uses technology to purify liquids, including red and white wines, by reducing their sulphur content.

This is reportedly a worldwide first in the wine industry.

"We produce a machine that makes it possible for the winemaker not to add sulphur to the wine," he said.

Sulphur is added to "preserve" the wine by disabling potentially harmful microbes.

It is also responsible, among other things, for the headaches and other side effects associated with wine.

"We use ultra-violet technology to purify liquids, ridding them of harmful microbes so that it is now possible to bottle wines without adding this chemical," Kebble explained.

The wineries already using the technology included Steenberg, L'Ormarins, Alluvia and Stellar.

"It's unbelievable how positively wine producers have reacted to this and how many of them are interested," Kebble said.

I have an old Canadian friend that has been making wine for over 50 years. I have learned from him that it's the sugar that gives you the headache. He makes wine with no sugar, or a 'zero' content. Sweeter wines are 1 or 2, etc. depending on how much sugar they have. One night while camping in Canada with him, I drank 2 bottles of his wine! I was drunker than a skunk but woke up the next day with no headache! Just buy dry wines with no sugar and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to try that the next time I try some wine. Usually I avoid wine because I get headaches from it.

Menkaure, I took a look at some wines today and none of them list ingredients. So there’s no way of knowing if they have added sugar to it. Do wines in Canada list their ingredients?

To tell you the truth, I have never bought Canadian wine. I really don't know. Perhaps the content is determined by what kind of wine it is? Merloe being a 2 perhaps????
Bob, the guy I know, generally says the 'drier' the wine, the less sugar. Yea, I know... How can a liquid be dry?? :-)
I've e-mailed him for an answer.

Sorry about that Menkaure, I’m not sure why but for some reason I was thinking you were in Canada. Thanks for the link, the info was interesting. :)

No problem.... We camp in Canada a lot. I like the absence of people over there.
BTW, I see you are from Michigan too, Where??? I'm from a suburb of Detroit.
